Brisbane is a city rich in local sporting tradition. The official sport of Queensland is Rugby League. However, almost any sport you can think of is played here, well, maybe not curling (sorry Canadians).
The biggest professional rugby team in Brisbane are the Brisbane Broncos. You can’t miss their gold and maroon colours. Founded in 1988 the Brisbane Broncos have secured top spot in the premiership 6 times. The Broncos play at Suncorp stadium, located just outside of the CBD in the suburb of Milton, to a maximum capacity of 52,000 supporters.
The Brisbane Reds are the local rugby union team. Although not the most popular rugby team in Brisbane, the Reds still manage to gain the second hight attendance of Brisbane sport teams. Second behind the Brisbane Broncos. They also share Suncorp Stadium with the Broncos and Roar (see below), gaining an average of 30,000 supporters a match. You can find them wearing an all red 1st kit and a white, black and red 2nd kit.
A sport growing in popularity, soccer fans can watch the Brisbane Roar play at Suncorp Stadium. Part of the A-leauge the Roar’s home kit is orange and black. The Brisbane Roar won their first A-league title in 2011 after going undefeated all season.
Australian Rules Football.
Although, Aussie Rules Football isn’t as big of a sport as it is in Victoria, Brisbane’s own team, the Brisbane Lions play host to teams from all over Australia. The club plays at the famous Gabba cricket grounds in Kanagroo Point. The club was formed in 1996 and since then as won 3 premiership titles in 2001, 2002 and 2003.
Believe or not, Baseball has quite a following in Australia. Brisbane’s very own Brisbane Bandits play in the Australian Baseball League. You can find them playing at the Brisbane Exhibition Ground.

For tourists, South Bank is definitely the place to check out. South Bank consists of shops, entertainment, museums and a man-made public beach that is open all year round. For those looking for a good night out, the Fortitude Valley is the place to be. This one district is host to clubs, bars and every thing in between. Checking out a concert is a must-do when visiting “the valley”.
Outside of Brisbane?
For those looking to explore Brisbane’s surrounding destinations. A trip 2 hours north to the Sunshine Coast is a real treat. The coast is covered with white-sand beaches that ocean front holiday rental homes. This is a perfect for a relaxing get-away destination. If you’re looking for more of a beach party atmosphere, the Gold Coast is worth visiting. The main city of Surfers Paradise host a plethora of Casino, beaches and shopping destinations. If you’re under 30 and looking for a good time this is one spot to checkout. Don’t forget to visit the amusement parks between Surfers and Brisbane.
For those with more time in Queensland, travelling north to the Whitsundays is a fantastic holiday destination. If you’re looking to explore the Great Barrier Reef, this would definitely be the spot.
